Lokpal is the independent anti-corruption institution established to especially inquire the corruption charges against administrative and legislative officials, including ministers and even Prime Minister. Lokpal is established under the Lokpal and Lokayukta Act, 2013, and covers all the central government officials, members of parliaments, and unions. Lokpal comprises a maximum of eight members that includes the chairperson and various other eight members. Lokayukta is the body established in every state to inquire about the corruption charges against the state public servants. Lokayukta functions under section 63 of the Lokpal and Lokayukta Act, 2013. Like Lokpal, Lokayukta is also an independent anti-corruption body to look after the state’s corruption. Like Maharashtra, few states have already appointed their respective Lokayukta, even before the Lokpal & Lokayukta Act, 2013. There are some states like Jammu & Kashmir, West Bengal, Nagaland, Tamil Nadu, etc., that have not appointed the Lokayukta yet. Lokayukta Vs. Lokpal Lokpal is constituted at the national level, while Lokayukta is constituted at the state level. The Lokpal committee members are appointed by the President, while the Governor appoints Lokayukta committee members. The Lokpal inquire about the corruption charges against public servants, administrative & legislative officials, and ministers at the central level. In the same way, Lokayukta inquires about the corruption charges against public servants and government officials at the state level. Lokpal comprises eight committee members and a chairperson, while Lokayukta is a three-member body. Lokpal was constituted to fight the corruption in the system at both the central and state levels. Both these bodies deal with the complaints against government officials, public servants, and ministers to combat corruption.
