The Khijadiya Bird Sanctuary in Jamnagar district of Gujarat has been recognized as a “Ramsar Site” and it was declared along with Bakhira Sanctuary – which is located in Uttar Pradesh.
Ramsar Convention, signed by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization), was held in the city of Iran in 1971.
This Convention is for the recognition of international importance wetlands and sites, especially those which provide waterfowl habitat.
What is a Ramsar Site?
A Ramsar site is an area of wetland that has been designated as important for the conservation of waterfowl and other migratory birds.
There are more than 2,430 Ramsar sites around the world, covering a total area of more than 2.4 million square kilometers.
In India, there are 49 Ramsar sites out of which four of them are in Gujarat including the newest site Khijadiya Bird Sanctuary.
About Khijadiya Bird Sanctuary
Khijadia bird sanctuary is located 15 km away from Jamnagar city. It can be reached by road, rail and sea route too.
This site has both freshwater marshlands as well as saltwater marshes. The number of birds you can spot at this site in a day will surprise you!
Salim Ali, a noted ornithologist visited the site and reportedly saw over 100 species of birds in one day.
