Donald King (born Aug 20, 1931 & brought up in Cleveland, Ohio, U.S), an American boxing promoter is famous for being involved in some major events in the history of boxing.
Some of his greatest achievements include promoting “The Rumble in the Jungle” and “Thrilla in Manila”. He was also responsible for promoting one of the most prominent boxers like Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, George Foreman, and Larry Holmes.
King was also associated with most of the other boxers like Tomasz Adamek, Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield, Chris Byrd, and John Ruiz.
Don King Career
Don King is a boxing promoter and manager. He entered the world of boxing with help from boxer Muhammad Ali and singer Lloyd Price.
King formed a partnership with Don Elbaum, who had years of experience promoting heavyweight boxers in Cleveland and was already managing several top boxers at that time.
In 1974, he negotiated a $10 million purse with the government of Zaire and got to promote a heavyweight championship fight between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman.
King was one of the top promoters in boxing in the 70’s. His fighters included Muhammed Ali, Joe Frazier, etc. King is most known for promoting the “Thrilla in Manila” fight between Muhammed Ali and Joe Frazer which took place on October 1, 1975, at Araneta Coliseum.
During the 1970s and 1990s, over a 20-year period, he promoted some of the biggest fights in history including those featuring Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield, Julio César Chávez and dozens more. He also managed to make a name for himself as a concert promoter for The Jacksons’ 1984 Victory Tour.
Recently, in 2008, Don King was elected to the Gaming Hall of Fame. He is now a semi-retired boxing promoter.

Don King married Henrietta who died at the age of 87 on December 2nd, 2010. He has one daughter Debbie and two adopted sons; Carl and Eric.
King, who is also politically active, supported Obama in the presidential elections of 2008 and 2012.
Don had also made media appearances to support George W. Bush during the previous election campaign of 2004, which was held at the Republican National Convention in New York City.
In 1987, King was made a ‘Mason-at-Sight’ by the Grand Master of Ohio. The following year he won an honorary degree from Central State University in Wilberforce, Ohio.

Don King has been sued by a number of boxers like Ali & Tyson. Former world champion Muhammad Ali sued Don King in 1982, alleging that he was underpaid $1 million.
The case was settled out of court for $50,000 after which the total sum paid to the boxer came down to $1.1 million, a sum which Ali had originally demanded from King.
Mike Tyson also sued Don King for millions of dollars and settled the case with him outside of court for $14 million.
