    What is a PFD?

PFD stands for Personal Flotation Device. PFDs are generally referred to as life jackets which should be worn while traveling on boats and ships. These life jackets will help you to float easily when you fall suddenly into the water or during an accident like when a boat gets capsized.

PFDs should be worn as a precautionary measure. They are hard to put on in the water and so, people should wear as soon as they enter a boat or ship or before entering.

Difference Between Explicit Knowledge and Tacit Knowledge

Knowledge means the information, understanding, and awareness gained by an individual through education, learning, and experience. The knowledge can be classified into two categories: Explicit Knowledge and Tacit Knowledge. Here we will try to understand the Difference Between Explicit Knowledge and Tacit Knowledge.

Before moving to the Difference Between Explicit Knowledge and Tacit Knowledge, it is imperative to carefully understand both the terms. Explicit knowledge is a written form of experience, and it is accessible to all and can be passed easily as it is documented. It is a basic form of knowledge where data is processed, organized, and structured into valuable information, that forms the explicit knowledge.

Tacit knowledge is the type of knowledge that is gathered by the individual on his own; the tacit knowledge is gained by personal experience, observations, insights, and circumstances. This is a personalized and specialized form of knowledge, which is not documented in a structured way. The tacit knowledge is gained through a cognitive process, and it is hard to pass on and difficult to share.

Now let us move to the Difference Between Explicit Knowledge and Tacit Knowledge:

    • Explicit knowledge can be recorded, stored, and documented in a structured form; while Tacit knowledge is difficult to explain and can’t be recorded.
    • Explicit knowledge is gained through the fact collection and structuring the available data into a proper format, while tacit knowledge is achieved through the self-experience, insight, and circumstances.
    • The explicit knowledge is easy to pass on as it is well documented, while tacit knowledge is not easy to pass on.
    • Explicit knowledge is gained through a systematic process of learning. There is a time frame to gather explicit knowledge; on the other hand, tacit knowledge is gained through self-analysis, self-experience, and there is no defined time-frame to gain tacit knowledge.

Any form of knowledge is essential for our survival. Still, both have got their importance when it comes to explicit and tacit knowledge, and the individuals should maintain the balance between the two to have a successful life.

The fastest shorthand writer was Dr. G.D. Bist. He was awarded the Guinness World Record certificate for writing over 240 words per minute (240 wpm). Interestingly, he made this possible in both English and Hindi languages which is really rare.

Another great thing about G.D. Bist is the fact that he was the first to complete a Ph.D. in Stenography in the world. He did his Ph.D. from the Punjab University.

To all those who get confused with the words Shorthand writing and Longhand writing, I would like to explain the definitions of these two in simple terms.

Shorthand writing is a form of symbolic writing which makes it easy to write something with more speed and accuracy in a specific language. The shorthand writing is otherwise known as Stenography. On the other hand, Longhand writing is the traditional form of writing.
